The United States became the first world market for organic
MD
The U.S. market for organic food has overtaken Europe to become the largest organic market in the world, according to a new report from Organic Monitor.
In the U.S., sales of organic foods have more than tripled since 2000 from 1.2% of total food sales to 3.7% last year to reach $ 24.8bn, that is $ 24 billion dollars.
The organic sector continues to grow at a faster rate than the food industry. The organic food sales increased 5% last year while food sales rose 2%.
Despite the rapid growth of organic acreage, production has not increased fast enough to meet demand. Imports rose and the countries of Latin America in particular, have become an important source of organic fruit and vegetables.
