Fresh fruit and veg consumption in Spanish households on a downward trend

The consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables within Spanish households continues to witness a YoY decline of 12.5% recorded until November 2022, amounting to a total of 6,400 million kilos, according to the latest data from the MAPA Food Consumption Panel.
Specifically, the consumption of fresh fruit from January to November 2022 amounted to 3,469 million kilos, reflecting a 12% decrease. In terms of value, the figures reached 6,722 million euros, experiencing a marginal increase of 0.2%.
Except for table grapes, the household consumption of all fruits witnessed a decline. Even the most popular fruits, such as oranges, experienced a 9% decrease, while bananas and apples faced declines of 14% and 6% respectively. Similarly, consumption of apricots was down by 17% and of cherries by 47%. Conversely, table grapes observed a 4% increase in consumption.
The consumption of vegetables within households amounted to 2,151 million tons, performing a 14% decline. The overall value also dropped by 5%, totaling 4,561 million euros. This downward trend affected tomatoes (11% decrease), lettuce (-11%), peppers (-18%), onions (-18%), green beans (-18%), and cabbage (-14%).
Fresh potato consumption dropped by 11% in volume, amounting to 780 million kilos, while the value decreased by 2%, reaching a total of 760 million euros.
