National Seal of Organic Production emerges to contribute to the image of Peruvian organic products
VU
In Peru, organic production is developed in 24 departments, and counts with over 100,000 small producers. In recent times, the area planted with organic products has shown a significant increase. This phenomenon is explained by the activity of producer organizations, companies and small producers that have this certification.
The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation of Peru (Midagri), through the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) reported on the creation of the National Seal of Organic Production. This element represents great importance for the trade, promotion and control of organic products in the domestic and international markets.
The objective of the Seal is to guarantee that the products comply with the norms of national organic production, and to help identify these products, which will facilitate the inspection, traceability, promotion and control of organic products in Peru.
In addition, it seeks to contribute to the image of the main Peruvian organic products destined for the domestic and international market such as cocoa, coffee, bananas and quinoa, among other products.
Through the Ministerial Resolution No. 0177-2021-MIDAGRI there was launched the Supreme Decree project which approves the creation of this seal. The users can share their opinions and suggestions in a period of 90 days via email
The implementation of the seal will not generate any costs for organic certification, because its design and official formats will be available for the use of organic operators, certification entities and commercial economic agents, for their identification by consumers.
Above all, this seal will not replace the organic certification granted by a certifying body.
Once approved, the National Seal will have to appear on the label of organic products before sale, and it must be also included in the certificate of organic products. The certification entities will be responsible for the use and administration, and their use will be authorized by Senasa.
