Double celebration in the United States for the blueberry festival which in July is its "National Month" and this year the 100th anniversary of the sector.
"National Blueberry Month" is celebrated every year in July for over 10 years. Many festivals and events around the fruit are held throughout the country and especially in the 38 states that produce it. Within this group, only 9 states represent about 98% of US production (TOP 5: Washington, Michigan, Oregon, Georgia, California).
This year 2016 is also the centenary of the first commercial blueberry harvest. Before 1916, the fruit had to be picked in the wild in nature. A botanist after years of research has successfully developed an hybrid plant, crossing several varieties, for a first significant production.
US production in 2016, in progress, is expected at 750 million lbs (pounds weight) about 340 194 tonnes for this fruit nicknamed "Little Blue Dynamo".
