Slight decrease in Mexico's pear production in the campaign 2021/22
VU
Mexico’s pear production in the campaign 2021/22 is projected at 25.705 tons, which is slightly lower over the previous year, according to a recent GAIN report from USDA.
The decrease is explained by the lack of investment in production technology and infrastructure, and little growth expectations in the next few years.
Most Mexican pears are cultivated "in the wild" without commercial agricultural care and are of low quality, as there is no standard for colour, size, or consistency. The quality of the domestic pear does not allow it to compete with imported fruit.
Mexican consumers prefer imported pears over domestic ones due to the higher quality and year-round availability.
In the campaign 2021/22, pear import volume would increase from 72.468 T (2020/21) to 74.620 T, due to increased supplies in the U.S. available to Mexico at competitive prices.
Export volume is expected to remain insignificant, with some 82 T.
Puebla and Michoacán will remain the main pear producing states, accounting for 73% of total production.
Planted area will total 3.672 hectares.
