Organic farming on the rise in Italy

The latest statistics (December 31, 2006) on organic farming in Italy have now been released by the Italian information system on organic farming SINAB. According to these data, provided by the Ministry of Agriculture MIPAF there are currently 51,065 operators, of these are 45,115 producers, 4739 processors, and 194 importers.
Compared to the previous year this represents an increase of the operators of 2.4%. The highest numbers are in Sicily and Calabria. The organically managed area amounts to 1,148,162 hectares, an increase of 7.6%.
