This season's favourable climatic conditions and the possibility of transferring production to the higher areas of the Region of Murcia and Castile-La Mancha ensure that in 2024 we will have local melons and watermelons until the end of summer and even the first weeks of autumn. Experts from Murcia point out that the orographical characteristics of the region allow production to be extended compared to other regions.
They explain that while in the Cartagena and Águilas countryside they can start growing at the end of spring, now they are moving crops to higher areas where conditions are optimal. They also emphasise that the quality of the melons and watermelons harvested this year is exceptional, with ideal flavour, sweetness and size.
Although demand in other European countries has been lower due to the cool weather, they are confident that consumption will increase from August onwards.
Murcia continues to be one of the main autonomous regions producing and exporting melon and watermelon. In 2023, the national export of watermelon reached 678,822 tonnes, with Murcia being the third exporting region with 125,114 tonnes. As far as melon is concerned, Murcia leads national exports with 49% of the total, including all its varieties.
