Fruit imports increased in the first half of 2020

In the Netherlands, according to data published by Statistics Netherlands (CBS) the inbound sea transport of refrigerated and frozen goods amounted to 5.6 million tonnes in the first half of 2020. This represents 17% of all cargoes of inbound containers.
During this period, the volume of inbound fruit shipments increased by 162,000 tonnes to 3.2 million tonnes. Fruit supplies now represent 57% of total inbound reefer transport.
Inbound banana shipments increased in volume by 155,000 tonnes to 844,000 tonnes. This represents more than a quarter of all inbound fruit shipments (3.2 million tonnes). Inbound avocado shipments increased by more than a third to reach 225,000 tonnes. This places avocados in 3rd place in terms of fruit transported in refrigerated containers, after bananas and grapes (362,000 tonnes).
More than a quarter of all refrigerated goods reaching the Netherlands in the first half of 2020 (almost 1.5 million tonnes) originated from Brazil, South Africa and Panama, each of which supplied almost 'half a million tonnes of cargo. However, Ecuador shows the strongest growth with an increase of 245,000 tonnes.
Also over the same period, reefer shipments of fresh vegetables fell in volume by 111,000 tonnes (24%).
