In 2022, Peru became a global leader in blueberry exports for the fourth consecutive year. With a total export value of $1.362 billion, Peru surpassed the United States, Canada, Morocco, Spain, and the Netherlands, according to the Center for Research on Global Economics and Business of the Association of Exporters CIEN-ADEX.
In 2021, Peru's blueberry exports reached $1.221 billion, a growth of 172% compared to 2020.
In recent years, the number of cultivated hectares in the country has increased. Previously, La Libertad, Lambayeque, Áncash, Ica, Lima, and Cajamarca were involved in blueberry production. However, in response to growing global demand, other regions such as Moquegua and Piura have also joined the blueberry cultivation industry.
Currently, there are over 65 blueberry varieties, with Ventura and Biloxi representing around 58% of the total. Among other varieties, Rocío, Atlas Blue, Emerald, Sekoya Pop, and Sekoya Beauty, stand out.
It should be noted that while the highest shipments of Peruvian blueberries occur between August and December, in January 2023, they totaled $72.624 million, representing a 4% increase compared to the same month in 2022, when the value was $69.751 million.
Peruvian blueberries were exported to 25 destinations in January 2023, with the United States being the top destination, accounting for 51.4% of exports, followed by the Netherlands at 27% with a 10.5% increase. The top ten destinations also included the United Kingdom, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Ireland, Spain, Israel, and Brazil. Of these, Brazil had the highest increase in demand, with a growth of 1,572.1%.
