Onions, spanish output rise 1.1 mln tons

The Spanish onion sector is more and more important, as confirmed by the growing production of the country every season. For the current campaign FEPEX (the Spanish fruit&veg producers and exporters’ association) forecasts an improvement of the total output, reaching 1,176,500 tons.
Exports totalled in 2006 268,571 tons, growing by 16.5% compared to the previous year. While imports amounted 37,794 that same year.
EU trade
At intra-community level, onions are one of the products that are most traded, reaching 1,144,919 tons in 2006. The Low Countries are the main suppliers, followed by Spain and Poland. Community imports from third Countries amounted 286,417 tons in 2006, being New Zealand, Egypt and Argentina the most important exporters.
