In the world avocado market, Australia is not a leading player but its production and exports have increased sharply in the 2021/22 season.
According to the annual report 'Facts at a glance 2021/22' Australia produced just over 122,197 tonnes of avocados in
2021/22, i.e. +56% compared to the 78,085 tonnes for the 2020/21 season.
In Australia, avocados are produced all year round thanks to the range of climates and conditions in the 8 main production areas. The state of Queensland is still the No. 1 production area with 48% of Australian avocados, the state of Western Australia is No. 2 with a share of 39%. In 2021/22 the Hass variety accounted for 83% of Australian production, and the Shepard variety, which is harvested in Queensland until late summer and autumn, accounted for 14%.
In terms of export, in 2021/22 Australia exported 11,626 tons, or +268% compared to 202/21 and a 9.50% share of the 122,197 tons produced in total. The main destinations were Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
Australian production is expected to increase sharply over the next few years, reaching around 170,000 tonnes per year by 2026.
