In Canada, potato production increased thanks to the increase in area and the increase in average yield, as well as favorable weather conditions during the harvest (Photo: potatobusiness.com).
Despite difficult weather conditions (cold and wet spring, hurricane) and considerable increases in production costs during the year 2022, total potato production in Canada has increased as well as the average yield.
According to local media, in Canada the total area in 2022 was 386,591 acres (156,447.8 hectares), an increase of +0.9% compared to the previous year. Total production reached almost 123 million quintals (cwt) of potatoes, or +0.8% compared to 2021.
Figures from Statistics Canada show that the average potato yield in Canada in 2022 was 322.4 quintals per acre, or +0.2% compared to 2021.
At harvest time, weather conditions were very favorable across Canada, allowing growers to harvest approximately 98.7% of the total seeded area.
