The port of Tauranga is the starting point for most exports of kiwis.
The most active container harbor in New Zealand, the port of Tauranga has set a new record of more than one million TEUs (units equivalent to twenty feet) processed in one year.
The port administration points out that the NZ $ 350 million ($ 255 million) invested over the last six years has allowed larger vessels to be accommodated and thus to handle larger freight volumes.
Last october the port was able to accommodate the first Maersk ships with a capacity of 9,500 TEU, 347 meters long. Each week the port receives vessels with a capacity of 7,500 to 11,500 TEU.
The port of Tauranga manages more than 20 million tons of cargo each year, of which 41% of the country's exports. The port is responsible for 43% of the GDP of the Bay of Plenty region. A region that recorded a growth rate of 7.7% in 2016.
