Italian and international speakers took stock of the varietal innovation and trends of the sector.
Table Grape Meeting, the table grape event during Macfrut, took stock of varietal innovation and industry trends with key operators and international speakers.
With an annual production of around 1 million tonnes on an area of 47 000 hectares, Italy is the leading European producer of table grapes and the 3rd largest in the world. During this meeting the speakers discussed several topics including varietal innovation, production techniques and seedless grapes. Insisting on a production always of better quality and not a production of larger quantities.
Genetic improvement programs have been launched for better resistance to powdery mildew but also to satisfy consumers taste preferences. The seedless grapes are favored by consumers, the majority (70-75%) of the grapes sold in Germany, 1st importer of Italian grapes are without seeds. Varieties containing pips are disappearing.
