Orchard View has record harvest and packout with help from revolutionary new Global cooling precoolers
In the past year a lot has been changed in fruit growing industry. On this track Orchard View, the fruit grower and cherry specialist from the USA, The Dalles, Oregon, has set its own record for fruit harvested. Orchard View harvested about 14,000 tons of fruit in 2016 – 4,000 tons more than its usual crop.
David Ortega, Orchard View's Director of Packing Operations, said the increase was supported by a major investment that Orchard View made in upgraded technology in both sorting and cold storage.
Ortega made an inquiry to Global Cooling – a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-based company specializing in produce precooling and recooling, and construction on an entirely new precooling system began in late April. Orchard View installed five of Global Cooling's two-tier Rapid-Cool Precoolers, and added its Jet-Ready Precooler as well.
The Rapid-Cool accommodates 2-tier pallet storage and can handle pallet heights ranging from 70" high to 94" high on each tier, allowing Orchard View to stack its cherries up instead of out while doubling the number of pallets stored with no need to build an entirely new storage unit. Combine two-tier pallets with twice the airflow and Orchard View is precooling a four times as much product in the same square footage. In addition to the Rapid-Cool, Orchard View utilized the flexbility offered by its new Jet Precooler for smaller loads.
According to Jim Still – Global Cooling President/Founder, faster precooling maximizes produce’s shelf life and weight. He emphasized that is not to be overlooked during the postharvest process. “I can’t stress enough how important is to precool product and to do it properly,” he said. “If you want to rapidly lower the temperature of harvested produce and drastically decrease spoilage, you have to invest in quality precooling.”
