Bulgaria has a small market for fruit and vegetable, accounting for less than 1% of EU consumption in 2006. The total consumption1 (industrial and consumer) of fruit in 2006 was 416 thousand tonnes (excluding wine grapes).
With a population of 7.72 million people, this was equivalent to a consumption of 54 kg
fruit per capita.
Between 2002 and 2006, consumption decreased 8%.
Consumption of vegetables was 709 thousand tonnes in 2006, which was equivalent to 92 kg per capita.
Between 2002 and 2006, consumption of vegetables decreased 17%.
Production of fruit and vegetables in Bulgaria is small compared to other EU countries and the country only accounts for 1% of total EU production volume.
Bulgaria produced 507 thousand tonnes of fruit in 2006. Production of fruit has been in
decline since 2002. Between 2002 and 2006, 30% less fruits were produced.
Grapes are the most important fruit crop. They accounted for 52% of total fruit production in 2006 and used mainly for wine production.
The other main fruits are watermelons (27%),
apples (5%), cherries (4%), plums (4%), and peaches and nectarines (4% together).
