The Zambian government suspended onion imports 2 years ago to help the domestic industry develop. Onion production has risen sharply.
Local media report that, according to the Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU), national production has just exceeded 40,000 tonnes of dry onions. The Minister of Agriculture, Reuben Mtolo, has stated that the country now has the potential to become an exporter.
This progress is the result of collaboration between the government and the ZNFU, which has enabled yields to be increased. This includes access to quality seeds, modern farming techniques and knowledge of disease control.
In contrast to ZNFU, other organisations such as ZFVA (Zambia Fruits and Vegetables Association) and OPAPA (Onions, Potatoes and Allied Products Association) have stated that the onions available in the country ran out last month.
