Sea transport, less expensive but longer, for exports from Pakistan to the Emirates.
Pakistan has just dispatched its 1st cargo to Dubai by sea. With an average cost per kilo 94% lower than the air transport but within 3-4 days. After this experience, exports could increase by 500%.
This first cargo contains a dozen varieties of Fruits & Vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, okra, melons ...). Until then, exports to Dubai and the Emirates were made by air. By sea the average cost per kilo is 94% lower than air transport. The only downside, the delivery time is 3-4 days per sea instead of a few hours by air.
While this experiment is conclusive, Pakistan's exporters believe they can exploit more markets in the UAE and other Gulf countries. Pakistan would be able to increase its exports to these destinations by 500% in the next 2-3 years.
