Wal-Mart plans major Canadian expansion
MD
Already the largest supermarket chain in Canada, Wal-Mart aims to accelerate its growth in the country to counter the arrival of fellow American chain Target.
Wal-Mart has confirmed plans to open 73 stores in Canada over the next year. These projects include the opening of new stores and expansion and renovation of existing stores. So far the U.S. giant announced nearly 40 projects for opening or renovation of stores this year to expand its network in Canada.
Wal-Mart coincides with the arrival of rival Target, which plans to launch in Canada in 2013. The growth of Wal-Mart stores in Canada comes at a time when sales rose by only 0.9% in the third quarter.
