In the UK, a number of factors are combining to keep potato prices high.
According to a report published by Mintec and compiled by analyst Harry Campbell, potato prices in the UK remain high due to lower stocks following the small harvest in 2023 and the anticipated delay in the harvest season due to a delay in the planting season.
MBP (Mintec Benchmark Prices) reveals that the benchmark price for English 'White Packing' potatoes has varied by +90% compared to 1 year ago, and that the benchmark price for English 'Maris Piper' potatoes has varied by +120% year-on-year.
As a result of more favourable weather conditions in May, planting progressed well. Harvesting is expected to be delayed by around 2 weeks.
Overall, the area planted should be similar to that in 2023.
