Brazilian scientists develop new passion fruit variety
VU
After 10 years of work, the Paraná Rural Development Institute — Iapar-Emater (IDR-Paraná) presented the new passion fruit variety “Light of the morning” (Luz da Manhã).
The cultivar stands out for its ability to be destined both for the fresh fruit market and for the frozen pulp industry. It can yield up to 30 tons per hectare, and if the grower opts for a second production cycle, it can bring another 50 tons.
According to the state coordinator of Fruit Growing at IDR-Paraná, Eduardo Augustinho dos Santos, 160 hectares of passion fruit are cultivated in the state of Paraná. The average productivity is still low (up to 14 tons per hectare), and most of it is destined for industrialization.
