Started 50 years ago as a way of promoting the region, the squared-watermelon harvest began in Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku Island (the smallest of Japan's four main islands). Popular as decorations and ornaments, these fruits cost more than 10,000 JPY (about 93 USD) each.

In Kagawa Prefecture, on Shikoku Island there are about ten squared watermelon producers. The harvest has started and will continue until the end of July. This year the producers expect a production of about 600 pieces.

A square watermelon is about 18 centimeters wide. Before the fruit is ripe, it is put in plastic containers for about 10 days, where it continues to grow and take shape. The squared watermelon is not very sweet and is not ideal to eat but is popular with consumers as decoration and ornament.
