Sales of organic products increase and berries become the No.1 category

In the United States, sales and volume of fresh organic products recorded further growth in the second quarter of 2021. In terms of sales, the berry category (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries) exceeds the category for the first time packaged salads.
According to the Q2 2021 Organic Produce Performance Report published by Organic Produce Network, total sales of organic fresh produce for the 2nd quarter of 2021 totaled $2.296 billion, an increase of + 4.1% in terms of sales. In terms of volume, the increase is + 0.2%.
For the 1st time, the berry category (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries) with $435 million topped packaged salads ($ 381 million) as the No.1 organic category in terms of dollar sales. These 2 categories are well ahead of apples ($164 million), aromatic herbs and spices ($105 million), carrots ($101 million), lettuce ($101 million).
Berries were also the stars of volume growth, joining citrus fruits, lettuce and tomatoes in the quarter's gains. In volume, the ranking is a little different with bananas in 1st position, ahead of berries, apples, carrots, packaged salads and potatoes.
Other information, during this 2nd quarter, sales and the volume of conventional fresh products decreased. Sales in dollars would be -3.3% and their volume -8.6% compared to the same period of the previous year.
