Confusion between "Tupai King" and "Mao Shan Wang" highlights deceptive practices among some sellers.
Media reports in Singapore reveal that some durian sellers are mislabeling varieties, often misleading customers by presenting the "Tupai King" as the popular "Mao Shan Wang." While Mao Shan Wang is known for its creamy texture and balanced sweet-bitter flavor, Tupai King is rarer, more bitter, and opens differently. Only about 1,000 Tupai Kings are produced annually, compared to Singapore's peak import of 100 tons of durians from Malaysia daily.
There are also concerns about durians labeled as Malaysian, with some actually originating from Thailand or the Philippines, leading to price differences. Malaysian durians are sold at higher prices, though Thai durians generally cost less. Following Malaysia's first durian season, these issues have made buyers more cautious, especially during the off-season when authenticity can be questionable.
