In the context of the forthcoming United Nations International Day Against Waste on 29 September, the new campaign of the Dia chain recommends consumers to ‘reverse shopping’. Planning menus and preparing a shopping list with what everyone needs is a very useful tool to avoid unnecessary spending when shopping. Added to this is an increasingly widespread trend to save time, money and reduce food waste: ‘reverse shopping’. Día's new anti-waste campaign called ‘Eat Better Every Day’ promotes this reverse shopping technique. It consists of first checking the pantry, fridge and freezer to find out what you really need and avoid hoarding, especially fresh products. Through the ‘Eat better every day’ programme, Dia offers informative content and recipes to facilitate the adoption of healthy habits, while optimising the household food budget and reducing waste.
Reducing waste by 23% by 2023
In parallel, the Día group company is making progress in meeting the targets set in its 2024-25 Sustainability Plan, having reduced food waste by 32% in 2023 in the chain thanks to preventive actions, such as stock management or optimisation of orders; redistribution of food through donations; or recovery of waste for other uses such as animal feed, composting or energy recovery. This is equivalent to 7,871 tonnes of food not wasted.
“Zero waste’ objective also
When products cannot be sold or donated, Dia is committed to recovering them to give them a second life and prevent them from ending up in landfill. Thanks to the implementation of the ‘Zero Waste’ project to promote circularity and minimise the generation of waste in its warehouses, improving separation and optimising its recovery, Dia has managed to recover more than 52,000 tonnes of waste, of which 1,200 tonnes have been transformed into fuel derived from waste, and another 7,000 tonnes have been used in the production of animal feed. In addition, the compost generated from this waste is equivalent to 6,100 tonnes, which has been used for agricultural purposes. Currently, eight of Dia's logistics centres have the Saica Natur ‘Zero Waste’ seal, which guarantees that more than 95% of the waste generated is reused, recycled or recovered, preventing it from ending up in landfill.
