By using greenhouse technology, Estidamah has enabled year-round asparagus production, moving away from traditional seasonal, open-field methods.
Greenhouse-grown asparagus has been successfully introduced by the National Research and Development Center for Sustainable Agriculture (Estidamah) in Riyadh, representing a significant advancement for Saudi Arabia's agricultural sector. This initiative aims to enhance food security and address the rising local demand for this nutritious vegetable.
By using greenhouse technology, Estidamah has enabled year-round asparagus production, moving away from traditional seasonal, open-field methods. The center has also explored growing asparagus alongside fruit trees through intercropping, maximizing land use efficiency.
Asparagus, known for its high nutritional value and salt tolerance, has shown promising results with potential yields of 700 grams per square meter annually. This project could significantly reduce Saudi Arabia's reliance on imported asparagus, which currently totals around 340,000 tons annually. Additionally, it is expected to benefit the tourism and hospitality sectors.
This effort aligns with the National Agriculture Strategy's goals to promote sustainability and strengthen the nation's food security.
