Onion imports in October reached 3,140 tons.
The Philippines has imported over 10,000 tons of fresh yellow onions to support domestic supply and stabilize prices. As of October 24, 10,370 T of onions have been imported, fulfilling nearly 65% of the 16,000 T quota set by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. due to expected shortages.
Monthly imports included 1,173 T in August, 5,857 T in September, and 3,140 T in October. Retail prices in Metro Manila have stabilized, with imported yellow onions costing between $1.25 and $2.50 per kilo, while local white onions range from $1.61 to $2.50 per kilo.
Local red onion stocks remain ample at 77,675 T, with no imports needed this year due to a strong harvest. Yellow onion stocks, mostly imported, stand at 2,922 T as of October 18.
