Malaysia's pineapple exports are growing rapidly, with New Zealand and France now added to its list of international markets. Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, chairman of the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board, highlighted that export shipments more than doubled last year, increasing from 800 to 1,778 containers. This growth reflects the global demand for Malaysian pineapples, supported by improved technologies that keep the fruit fresh during transportation.
By September of last year, pineapple exports were valued at around $203 million (RM899 million). The total export value is expected to exceed $225 million (RM1 billion) once the year-end figures are finalized. This milestone is linked to a record production of over 100,440 tonnes, surpassing the target of 85,000 tonnes. The rise in production is largely due to the expansion of large-scale plantations by major companies.
The land dedicated to pineapple farming also grew by 1,674 hectares, reaching a total of 18,275.7 hectares. This expansion not only boosts Malaysia's economy but also improves the livelihoods of local farmers. As part of the 11th Malaysia Plan, the government aims to ensure 80% of pineapple farmers earn at least $1,125 (RM5,000) per month, with plans to increase this income to $1,800 (RM8,000) in the future.
In Sarawak, efforts are underway to expand pineapple plantations to 20,000 hectares by 2030. Last year alone, the plantation area grew by 228 hectares. Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg supports this initiative, which will play a vital role in achieving Malaysia's pineapple production and export goals.
