Peru boosts spice exports with ginger and turmeric

Third in global ginger trade with $118.3M in 2024, the country shifts from bulk supplier to strategic exporter.
Peru ranked as the world’s third-largest ginger exporter in 2024, with shipments totaling $118.3 million — behind only China and the Netherlands, according to the Association of Exporters (ADEX). Despite an 8% drop from the previous year, the country’s position remains strong, largely thanks to the Junín region, which accounts for 85% of national ginger exports.
Turmeric exports also surged, reaching $7.7 million — a 38.5% increase — despite having no prior export history. Edgar Vásquez, director of ADEX’s Global Business and Economics Research Center, noted that international buyers are increasingly prioritizing sustainability, formal labor practices, and certified agricultural standards.
He emphasized that Peruvian ginger has the potential to become not just a standout product, but a lasting presence in global markets. The country’s focus on quality, traceability, and responsible production is enhancing its competitiveness. These gains come amid broader trends favoring healthy and natural ingredients worldwide.
